Pool House Addition

​We added a pool house to an existing family room which had been added to a 1920's traditional home in 2005. 
The challenge was to provide shelter, yet not block the natural light to the family room. An open gable provided the solution and worked well with the traditional architecture.
 
Extensive Additions & Renovations

​We added a new kitchen and covered terrace wing, and a bar and office wing onto an existing 1920's home. There's also a new mud
room and renovated family room. The rear terrace will have a vaulted roof that compliments the 2nd floor master bath addition on top of the existing garage. The new unfinished basement below the kitchen addition has 10 ft clear ceilings for hockey practice.

One of the main ideas for this house was to create outdoor “rooms” defined by the various wings of the main house. The entry forecourt is defined by the master bedroom and garage wings. The rear terrace is defined by the pool house and family room wings. These rooms then become an extension of the public spaces of the main house. The rotunda marks the main entry. It also organizes the plan vertically in that the master bedroom wing is a half story off the main entry level.  This was done for bedroom privacy and to add more natural light to the basement playroom.  The spiral stair terminates into a unique circular media room below the entry hall.

Addition/Renovation

The idea for this project was to create a single space that could accommodate a large kitchen, an informal dining table, a hearth area and a screened porch so that all family and friends could gather together in one space. Another idea was to tie the new addition to the rear garden through the use of large windows and the screened porch overlooking a new paved terrace.

The owner also asked for a new Basement Rec Room with a direct connection to the new Family Room. This was achieved by incorporating a single flight of stairs that runs behind both fireplaces on the west side. The new basement space is sunken two feet below the existing basement level to achieve higher ceilings and the grade was reworked to retain a connection to the rear yard terrace with French doors and two large windows.  

Kitchen/Family Room/Garage Addition

The owners requested a large open family room and kitchen for entertaining on the main level with an oversized two car garage for cars on the lower level.  They also wanted to level the rear yard to create a soccer practice field. The challenge was to accommodate a large addition and still leave enough open space for the soccer area. The solution was to place the addition and its roof line parallel to the existing house so that it appeared to be a second gable stepping down the hill from the main house. Stepping the addition down allowed for a taller garage space and acted as a retaining wall to level the site while using the minimal yard space.  A large dining deck was added off the new kitchen to take advantage of the lovely view of the garden.  
 
 
Family Room/Kitchen/Master Bedroom Addtion

The challenge of this project was to arrange the new spaces and functions so that they flowed together with the existing house, while simultaneously keeping  the site open enough for a sunny patio.  The new kitchen became the central focus flanked by the family room and breakfast room wings. We designed the family room wing as a one story structure to make a more intimate setting for the outdoor patio. This also allowed us to vault the family room ceiling and highlight it with indirect cove lighting. The master bedroom 2nd floor terrace provides a private connection with the outdoors and also covers the grilling area on the patio below as well as providing a sheltered walkway from the garage during inclement weather. 
Four Season Sunroom Addition

The idea for this project was too create a space that could be warm and sun filled in the winter yet still be cool, shady and easily be opened up to the warm breezes of summer.  Eight foot tall sliding glass doors where used as they allowed in maximum sunlight and were easily opened to allow maximum ventilation.  Remotely operated skylights allow the rising warm air to be ventilated outside. The southern roof overhang was planned to block the hot summer sun yet allow the winter sun to warm the space.  A radiant heated tile floor and a gas fireplace provide additional heat.  Also part of the project was a walk out basement playroom below the sun room with a separate back door entry.
Kitchen/Family Room/Porch/Basement Addtion

The challenge for this addition was to open the back of the house to the existing pool, terrace and garden, but also work within the constraints of the area bounded by the existing house and pool deck.  The solution was to employ a linear scheme with the kitchen, family room and covered porch aligned in a row parallel to the back of the house. The elevation was divided into three parts: masonry for the kitchen, glass for the family room and a colonnade for the porch. The stone base was used to unify all three elements. The existing first floor was six feet above the pool deck which allowed for ample windows in the new basement rec. room and also gave the covered porch a better elevated view of the tree canopy beyond the yard. Pool furniture storage is provided below the porch. 
 
Addition/Renovation

The goal for this project was to renovate the dated kitchen and open it to an informal family room. In order to achieve this we switched the positions of the current family rm and dining rm. Thus, the family room is adjacent to the kitchen and the dining room moved into the sun room. A large arched opening was added to connect the kitchen and family rm. The tv was positioned to be viewed from the kitchen, breakfast table and family rm seating group. A new matching wood floor was added to the kitchen to help tie the spaces together. 
Another facet of the project was to add a 2 car garage with a mud room and pantry on the 1st floor with a new master suite above the garage on the 2nd floor. The suite contains separate closets, a master bath and a large master bedroom with windows on three sides.
A new slate like paver terrace was added between the new garage addition and main house.
 
Library Addition

The goal of this project was to create a traditional 2nd floor library on top of an existing masonry garage which captured the views of the backyard patio and pool.  The open gable roof design allows natural northern  light to filter deep into the library space as well as open the view to the backyard through the 14 foot high bay window.  The two story porch provides a covered grill area on the patio level and a shaded reading space off of the library.  The west clerestory window also adds light.  The beams, cabinets , mantel  and moldings are all made of stained  cherry wood.

The existing house was a single story colonial ranch with a full basement. The owners liked southern antebellum architecture and wanted to incorporate elements of that architectural period into their renovated home. The solution was to find elements from Palladio’s country houses that could be reinterpreted to suit the owner’s informal lifestyle. Thus, the center of the house was torn down and the kitchen was placed in a 24 foot diameter rotunda to become the central element of the house with all other public spaces radiating from it.  The former bedroom wing became the master suite and new bedrooms were added to the second floor overlooking the rotunda. The bedrooms also connect to a colonnaded two story front porch.  A new pool with a detached pool house and garage were also part of the project scope.  The lighted cupola gives the home a classic antebellum touch.

Basement Renovation

This project began as a raw 3,000 sq. ft. unfinished basement that opened to the backyard.  The client wanted us to create a space that broke with the traditional décor of the main house so that it felt like a vacation destination! The program called for a bar, a large seating area, a game area, dance room, fitness room, steam bath and changing area as well as a new outdoor pool.

 

Our idea was to make all the public spaces open and interconnected with  each other with direct views to the outdoors. We placed the private spaces on the interior sheltered from view. The bar became the focal point with connections to the game and lounge areas with operable windows that open to an outdoor counter overlooking the pool. 

Kitchen Renovation

This project consisted of updating a 1920's Webster Groves house by combining the formal dining room with the new kitchen. The large island serves as a central work space for the kitchen, a breakfast space adjacent to the terrace end and a dining room serving area at the other end.  
Kitchen Renovation/Bathroom Remodel

This project consisted of modernizing a charming Webster Groves house by opening up the kitchen to the family room.  The kitchen cabinets are all by Ikea reducing the overall project costs.  On the second floor the master bathroom was expanded and a bathroom was added.
